Cooperative Education

Professional Cooperative Education is part of a student’s learning experience. The overall goal of the cooperative experience for the student is to apply education and training in a work environment and to enhance student employability options. Upon successful completion the student receives credit for the experience.

Each student and cooperative experience location is unique; therefore, a special contract must be developed for each one. The content and process of the experience will be determined mutually by the work site and the student. The student is required to be an understudy to a professional, solve problems as assigned, and produce products of value to the organization.

Credit for the cooperative experience is based on a minimum of 33 hours of work per academic credit. Classroom teaching will not be required, but the student must meet with his or her instructor once a week.

Three people are involved in a Cooperative Education Experience:

The Intern- primarily responsible for identifying and completing experiences relevant to professional development and to see that all course requirements are accounted for and submitted on time.

The Supervisor - in the organization in which the internship is performed-provides instructional supervision as the intern practices various skills.

The Instructor -secures the internship, evaluates the experience, and posts a grade. All work submitted for grading must be typed using a professional format and correct English usage.

During the initial stages of your professional education, you should decide what type of internship you want and need, where it should take place, how much and what kind of practice you need, and whether it should be supplemented by other course work.

Your instructor will provide guidance, help you register for the class, and assist with the internship placement.

These activities should be done before the quarter begins

For Example a Student Might:

  • develop a new instructional program or update an existing program in a corporation
  • work with a form of experiential education in a factory-training situation-learning skills required of a training coordinator
  • work with an administrator in a technical college-read policy papers and operations correspondence, attend staff/faculty meetings, work on various projects and assist the staff in a variety of ways
  • perform research work in a community college-conducting a needs survey, follow-up study, employer survey, or a cost benefit analysis
  • develop media in a proprietary school-learning skills such as storyboarding, scripting, photography, artwork, and equipment operation, and/or more general knowledge about media development processes, learning resource center operation
  • work as a counselor in a government training program such as Job Corp-practicing vocational advisement, explaining job finding/ keeping, providing personal/social counseling, learning to interact in a helping manner with people

You may need to meet with your instructor as well as your on the job supervisor to verify that the minimum of three objectives are applicable and measureable.

*The agreement must be fully executed before the Cooperative Education Experience can begin.

Proposal

Your instructor may ask you to provide a Cooperative Education Experience Proposal. It should contain the following:

  • A statement about the Cooperative Education Experience: when, where, what, how.
  • A statement describing how the Cooperative Education Experience will contribute to your personal/professional development. How will it be beneficial to the business or institution where you are serving the internship
  • A list of (minimal five) objectives-must be product and/or service based
  • A description of the proposed assignments, duties, and activities necessary to complete the Cooperative ducation Experience. They must be aligned with the objectives.
  • Describe how you and/or those on the Cooperative Education Experience site may use your experience and resulting products in the future.
  • Include a cover sheet

Wrap-up Report

Your instructor may ask you for a Narrative Wrap-Up Report describing your over-all experience and lessons learned. It should contain the following:

  • An informational statement about the Cooperative Education Experience: class title, when and where it took place, your stated objectives
  • Touching on each stated objective: did you meet that objective, how so? If not, why not?
  • Did the Cooperative Education Experience meet your expectations? How so or why not?
  • Will the experience contribute to your personal/professional development and goals? How so or why not?
  • Will the experience contribute to your personal/professional development and goals? How so or why not?
  • Include a cover sheet
