About the Festival
In 2005, through the work of French Instructor Elodie Phan and film instructor Mary Hyatt, SFCC was awarded a grant from
the French government to put on a French Film Festival, which was held in the Bing Crosby Theater (then known as The Met).
The second year the festival expanded to include films from other countries and moved to The Garland Theatre to facilitate
parking. When funding was cut in 2008 it seemed that the festival might be cancelled, but Spanish Instructor Bonnie Brunt
brought together a group of faculty and students who were committee to find a way to continue. To this day the festival is
largely funded by student groups; major contributors over the years have been the French Club, the Spanish Club, the
Alliance Club, with support from many others. Now in its eighth year, the festival continues to bring “award-winning films
from around the world” to Spokane and has introduced thousands of students to the world of International Cinema.
