What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) utilizes peer-assisted study sessions to help students taking the most
difficult classes on campus succeed! SI groups are regularly-scheduled, informal review sessions in which
to compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. SI participants
learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together in collaborative groups. The
sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, students who have previously excelled in the course and who attend
all class lectures, take notes, and share their own insights into being successful in the class.
Who can attend SI sessions?
Any student registered in a class with SI attached may attend. Sessions are free and completely voluntary.
Attendance at SI is not based on “being and expert” or “needing help” in the subject. Stay as long as
needed; this isn’t an additional class to attend, this is Supplemental Instruction! Everyone is welcome!
Which courses currently offer SI Sessions?
During Spring Quarter 2009 the following courses offer SI:
- Biology 160, 241 & 242
- Math 99, 141 & 148
- Philosophy 106
SI sessions are offered for specific sections of these courses.
