Statement of Purpose
PURPOSE -- To increase understanding of the dynamic system of humanity’s
life on earth and what it means to all ecosystems, flora and fauna. Education, community
action and on-the-ground activities will enhance the message for SFCC community
that life on earth is interdependent and based on complex systems. Humans need nature
whole and healthy in order for our species to live sustain ably.
Long-Term Goal: Connected to the United Nations’ proclamation and
implementation thereof that 2005-2015 is the decade of sustainability education,
SFCC’s Earth Justice Club will work to engage a larger dialogue about sustainability
and environmentalism for the region and on a global outlook.
Short-term Goals: The Earth Justice Club can be a facilitating
group to bring together faculty, other SFCC clubs and other departments to help
to understand the nuances of sustainability on campus and environmental justice
for those not part of the dominant culture. We have resources within the community
to bring relevant speakers to campus; to coordinate and cosponsor hands-on events
like energy fairs or sustainable agriculture markets or workshops and charities
concerning Spokane’s planning. Our goal is to make connections to other fields –
sociology, politics, history, arts and culture, science, and other fields or disciplines
– so we do not treat environmental education and ecological awareness in a vacuum
or as disconnected endeavor.
