Post 9/11 G.I. Bill (Chapter 33)
The New Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is effective August 1, 2009 (Fall 2009 quarter)
Are you eligible?
- Do you have one the following:
- 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001?
- Discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days continuous active duty?
- Are you a spouse or a dependent of an Active Duty service member who:
- Served 6 years and has reenlisted an additional 4 years, for a total of 10 years of service?
- Is currently serving Active Duty or transferred Chapter 33 benefits BEFORE separation/retirement?
If you answered "yes", then you may be eligible for Chapter 33 benefits.
If you are eligible, how much will you receive?
The chart below is an indication only of the percentage you may be allowed. There are many variables in how
applicable active duty time is calculated. Officially applying for this new bill is the only way to find out
exactly what you will receive. VA must check with Department of Defense for full service information.

REMEMBER: VA will pay tuition only for those classes that are required for graduation in your
specific program of study.
If You Wish to Apply
Please do not be in a rush! There are many "ins" and "outs" to this new bill, and it may not be the best choice
for you. Choosing Chapter 33 is an irrevocable decision. You may want to take the following steps:
- Go to www.gibill.va.gov and educate yourself as much as possible.
- Follow that up with a visit to www.military.com
- If you have questions, please call the VA (1-888-442-4551) or email your questions by accessing VA's
"questions and answers" at www.gibill.va.gov
If you decide to apply, you will complete an application on the VA website:
http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp. Click on Start VONAPP
You will receive a Certificate of Eligibility from the VA. Bring a copy of the eligibility letter to the Veterans
Coordinator on campus for further processing.
