Testing Center

Placement testing is an essential key to student success at Spokane Falls Community College.

All incoming students are required to take the COMPASS English test prior to registering for any English courses unless:

  • You have previous college-level English credits to transfer into SFCC.
  • You have completed an assessment within the last year at a Washington State Community College; please submit a Reciprocity Form.
  • You are not pursuing a degree or certificate and will not be enrolling in English courses.
  • You can bypass testing using your high school GPA, ACT or SAT test scores.

All incoming students are required to take a math placement test prior to registering for any math course unless:

  • You are a recent high school graduate who qualifies for the Pre-Calculus Agreement.
  • You plan to complete a vocational/technical program with no math requirements other than Business Math (BUS 102, MATH 103).
  • You are not pursuing a degree or certificate and will not be enrolling in Math courses.
  • You can bypass testing using your ACT or SAT test scores.

Placement Testing

Placement testing at SFCC consists of two components: math and English. At the initial appointment, students will complete the untimed, computer-based COMPASS reading proficiency assessment as well as their first attempt at our MyMath placement test.

The majority of the tests are untimed. Plan to spend approximately 2 hours.

Valid photo identification is required for placement testing.

You will also be enrolled in a 16-week online MyMath Test program. Students have the option of doing unlimited practice tests at home and ONE chance to re-test at the Testing Center during the 16-weeks.

If you ONLY need MATH placement testing, this is not the correct type of appointment.

If you are unable to attend your scheduled testing appointment, you must CANCEL 24 HOURS PRIOR to your appointment or you may be charged a $30 NON-REFUNDABLE processing fee.

COMPASS Study Guides

Looking for tips on how to prepare for your assessment test? You may download PDF versions of sample questions.

Initially, Running Start students only take the COMPASS reading assessment. The MyMath Test study program can be activated at any time, but do take care not to wait too long to begin the math testing process to ensure your high school graduation plans remain on track! This document will further explain math options for Running Start students.

Running Start students can re-take the COMPASS test for an additional $30 fee.

The COMPASS test is untimed. Most students average 45-60 minutes to complete.

Valid photo identification is required for placement testing.

You may be eligible to bypass English testing and gain college-level English placement if you:

  • have completed at least THREE semesters of high school with a cumulative GPA ≥ 3.0
  • SAT scores ≥ 470 (average of reading and writing scores)
  • ACT scores ≥ 19 (average of English and reading scores)

You may be eligible to bypass math testing and gain college-level math placement if you:

  • took Pre-Calculus in high school and achieved a B or higher for two consecutive semesters (no B-)
  • SAT scores ≥ 550
  • ACT scores ≥ 23

The SFCC Math Department has developed the MyMath program to provide students with an opportunity to study for up to 16 weeks before taking the exam. By utilizing the study plan and free tutors, students may be able to test out of some of the lower-level math courses, saving time and money.

***As of February 2015, all new students will complete the math placement test along with the English placement test at their initial appointment.

If you are a current or transfer student who would like to activate or reactivate a MyMath Test program, please follow this link for more information.

SFCC charges a $30 fee for placement testing.
