What is Worker Retraining?

Worker Retraining is a Washington state cooperative initiative between the Community Colleges of Spokane and the Washington State Employment Security Department. This initiative is designed to help unemployed workers retrain and re-enter the workforce. Priority is given to dislocated workers. Services provided through this initiative are:
  • Employment and training assistance
  • Counseling
  • School-to-work and job transition
  • Career planning
  • Customized retraining
  • Entrepreneurial training
  • Financial assistance, which may be used only for tuition, books, childcare and transportation
  • On-campus access to a qualified Employment Security counselor
  • Job placement assistance

Am I Eligible?

You are eligible if you have been laid off or have received a layoff notice from a Washington state employer, and you meet one of the following criteria:
  • You are currently receiving, or are eligible to receive, Washington state unemployment benefits.
  • You have exhausted Washington state employment benefits within the past 24 months.
  • You are a dislocated worker.
  • You are a displaced homemaker.
  • You were formerly self-employed.
  • You are a veteran separated within 24 months from armed forces w/ honorable discharge

What is WorkFirst?

WorkFirst Financial Aid (WFA) is a program that pays for tuition, books, and required fees for eligible students.

Students may attend full, half, or less than half time and may enroll in credit or non-credit classes.

Am I Eligible?

To be eligible for WFA you must meet the following criteria:
  • You must enroll in classes that are job-related or improve your employment opportunities.
  • You cannot be receiving Federal Financial Aid.
  • Your family income must be at or below 175% of the federal poverty level adjusted for family size.

What is WorkSource?

WorkSource is a joint venture of organizations including the Employment Security Department, local businesses and colleges, and other state agencies dedicated to addressing Washington State's employment needs.

What is an "Affiliate Site"?

WorkSource Affiliates serve special populations and are electronically linked to the complete WorkSource system. Affiliates offer self-service resource rooms, job search activities, and specialized training and career counseling services.

SFCC WorkSource Affiliate Site

The WorkSource Affiliate Site at SFCC is located in the Student Union Building, Bldg. 17, on the SFCC campus. Within that building are several WorkSource sites, including the Community Support Center, the Career Center, the Worker Retraining/WorkFirst Offices, and the Student Employment/Work Study office.
